Making Space Project 2023
“… participatory art creates a space in which all can speak and be heard, where our pain and hopes can be shared, where new can build common ground and ways of working together, where our creativity and empathy might find better ways of living.” ~ Francois Matarasso
Making Space is a collaborative social practice project between the Trinity Art Group (TAG), Winchester School of Art, DOP Cameraman Joe Cooper, and Southampton City Art Gallery. TAG is a community art group based in Winchester that comprises individuals who have experienced or are vulnerable to homelessness, mental health issues, and social isolation, with support from the charity Trinity Winchester.
As part of a contextual practice framework, TAG and WSA students developed various art-making strategies to provide a space for the community to explore and question contexts pertinent to their world. Through the workshops, the group produced costumes and props to explore possible group identities separate from the stereotypical identities foisted onto homeless individuals.
The final workshop was reshaped as a museum intervention, where the group occupied Southampton City Art Gallery and took over the space on their own terms. The exhibition, formed from the documentation of the Making Space workshops, is now on display in Southampton City Art Gallery's sculpture hall until June 2023.
I hope you visit the exhibition to see the incredible art produced by the Making Space project and attend one of our workshops to become a part of this impactful community.
