Tate Modern 10 Minute Talk, April 2019
BA (Hon) Fine Art: Painting. University of Southampton Winchester School of Art, 1999
MA European Fine Art (pass with distinction). Barcelona, Spain (University of Southampton), 2000. Doctoral Researcher. University of Southampton, WSA. 2020 (on-going). The notion of “art and community” is central to my practice – or to be more precise I am concerned with the artist’s role as a bridge between the wider community and those on the periphery of the community; and in doing so make the invisible visible. I do this by investigating and critically considering participatory art as a means to have a positive impact on the lives of those in our community who may be at risk of homelessness and/or social isolation. My practice revolves around the implementation and development of community projects connecting educational, commercial and charitable organisations to form new (more effective and responsive) models of cultural engagement and inclusion for all. I work in partnership with the charity Trinity Winchester (a drop-in service supporting homeless and vulnerably housed people) and Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton - where I am Post Graduate Researcher working towards a PhD. Since 2005, I have worked as a “Gallery Lecturer” through Southampton City Art Gallery - providing guided tours, lectures, seminars and workshops for universities, schools and other educational organisations. I also work through Hampshire Cultural Trust providing a rolling programme of public art history lectures through various art centres in Hampshire. I contributed social history tours, talks and lectures to Southampton's Sea City Museum and Tudor House Museum. My speaking engagements have developed over the years and I now provide an evolving programme of talks for the WI, NADFAS, University of the third age. |
